How to Spot a Misleading Discount
Simple checks that help separate a real value from a dramatic-looking percentage.
Look beyond the percentage
A large percentage can be calculated from a reference price that shoppers rarely paid. Compare the final price with similar products, the product's usual market range, and what features are included.
Watch for bundles
Bundles can look heavily discounted while including low-value accessories. Check the exact model number, package contents, and whether each included item is something you would have bought separately.
Check condition and seller
Renewed, open-box, and third-party offers can be worthwhile, but they are not directly comparable to a new item sold by the main retailer. Confirm condition, seller, warranty, and return window.
Use a pause rule
For nonessential purchases, wait long enough to compare at least two alternatives. A deal is only useful when the product fits your actual need, available space, and budget.
